Hi Everybody!

Our kickstarter was a complete success. This month has been unbelievable.

Tomorrow we hit the studio to begin recording our upcoming album at The Atomic Garden Recording Studio – in the East Palo Alto, CA. Thank you all for your support in helping make this happen.  I’ll be doing my best do blog via twitter @dstrynateallen and perhaps on destroynateallen.tumbler.com if time allows. We fly down to the bay area tomorrow and we’ll be back in Portland on Tuesday. This is gonna be a crazy weekend we’re shooting for 19 songs in 3 studio days. Wish us & GnarBoots luck!

Much Love!

Nate & Tessa Allen

Here are a few bands that have recorded at The Atomic Garden:

Folklore! Narcissism! Destruction!

Digital release of the Insomniac Folklore / Destroy Nate Allen / Self Proclaimed Narcissist triple split EP hits Bandcamp today!!

Read All About It:

Our friends Danielle & Michael wrote a critical / joke of an essay about Destroy Nate Allen, Insomniac Folklore and Self Proclaimed Narcissist. At first the essay stung a bit and then lightening struck!!!!

We had to release a split EP that included this amazing essay as the only liner notes. The album had to include “covers” and “originals” by all three bands. It’s hard to say who wrote which songs… it’s all become one big joke and I love it.

You see Tyler, Eric and I are all from the same small Oregon town of Roseburg. We’ve been friends for years and in more ways than one we’ve probably inspired each other to be more creative. I know I’ve stolen an idea or 2 over the years.

So with that in mind we have unleashed what is probably the most narcissistic album in history. The art is packed full of epic and awkward photos and comes complete with an amazing essay exposing the dark side of Folklore, Narcissism and Destruction.

I’m also pretty stoked because I was able to design the artwork which if I do say so myself is worth the free cost of the download.

To collect all 9 songs and read the essay you must visit:

So there you have it, the first scavenger hunt in the history of Destroy Nate Allen!

3 EPIC ROCK N’ ROLL SHOWS!!!!

We leave on tour June 4th but before that we have 3 killer Portland shows. All are worth attending and each will be pretty different. Here are the dates and the selling points:

May 11th – The Farm House (our place!) – a very rad folk show!
w/Medicine For The People, Kelli Schaefer, Seth Martin & The Menders.
This is night of epic sing-a-longs will feature Seth Martin’s last US show for a year and the stop in your tracks rock n’ roll of Kelli Schaefer, who just got named as one of Portland’s best new bands by the Willamette Week. Check the facebook Event

May 16th – The Bomb Shelter – crazy fun punk show!
w/Kepi Ghoulie, Danger Death Ray, and one very special guest.
- This will be a super fun, Kepi (asian man/ x-groovie ghoulies) is very, very neat to see live and the mystery guest features members of band I thought I’d never play with and of course we put out a 7″ with Danger Death Ray last year! Check the facebook event.

May 20th – The Sea Shanty! – The best of both world, a great night of folk punk!
w/Autry!, Ether Circus and Self Proclaimed Narcissist
This is our last Portland show until late August. Autry rocks wonderfully and we rarely get to enjoy the sweetness that is Ether Circus. The Sea Shanty is our favorite place to rock and we’re putting out a split with SPN later this summer. Check the facebook event!

Fairbanks News Miner Article!

FAIRBANKS – Destroy Nate Allen doesn’t sound like the name of a band that would perform uplifiting, energetic folk-chant music. But with all the energy and intensity that front-man Nate Allen puts into it, maybe it is physically destroying him a little bit.

Known for his aggressive, in-your-face performances, Allen usually performs as a duo with his wife, Tessa. But Allen will be solo when he visits Alaska next week.

Allen is more than a full-time student, taking 26 credits at two Portland, Ore., schools, trying to complete bachelor’s and associate’s degrees at the same time. This week is his spring break, and he’s using it to perform.

“I’m leaving my laptop at home,” he said on the phone, while walking to class in Portland.

Allen has toured in the Lower 48 with bands like The Builders and The Butchers, Mythological Horses and The Scurvies, based out of Alaska. It was The Scurvies that convinced Allen he should come to Alaska.

“They keep saying ‘come to Alaska,’ so I decided to take charge,” he said.

Allen started his music career as a solo act, playing soft, acoustic music. He later realized that a lot of his solo stuff was based on foundations that were rooted in bitterness and fear, even if the music didn’t actually speak to those things.

So he decided to focus on that bitterness and fear and on his “personal brokeness.” His music morphed into what it is now, and since he went by “Nate Allen” he figured he needed a new moniker.

“Destroying his band name,” he said about his new name. “It’s very flippant and spunky.”

The change in the name also represented a change in his performance style. He had been standard acoustic folk. But after he did a solo U.S. tour in 2007, he realized that in order to make enough money to get to the next city, he had to stand out.

It didn’t help that he developed pneumonia days before the tour started. His natural style was already quiet, so he had to up the ante if he wanted to continue.

“It was not intentional, but I thought ‘If I have four songs to win this audience, what can I do?’” he said. “Climb on something? Or go stand on them?”

So that’s what he did.

Always a fan of pop songs, many of his tunes are inspired by three-chord hooks. That plays into the catchy nature of his folk chants.

He said that his solo show is generally just as high energy but with songs that are more introspective. His song selection is broader, too. When he performs with his wife, they have a set list that theY tend to stick with.

But even if the show is unexpected and even a little crazy, he hopes people leave feeling good.

“It’s guaranteed to show you a good time,” he said. “What I really value is making people feel like they’ve spent their time well.”
